Scabiosa stellata

Seed available June 2025

**NOT TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA**

With smaller and rather non descript pincushion flowers that are white with a very slight blue tinge, it would be easy to dismiss this Scabiosa. But these flowers develop into the most unusual and beautiful spherical, geometric papery seed heads. They are bronzy with lovely lines of deep purple and lime green centers.

Held high on long strong stems, these ‘star balls’ ( translation of the German name ‘Sternkugal’ ) mix well in cut bouquets adding an element of interest. They are essentially dry at this stage and hold well for months.

TRANSPLANT (recommended) - Sow 4-6 weeks before last frost. Barley cover as light aids germination. Transplant to larger containers when the first true leaves appear. Harden off and transplant outside after last frost.

DIRECT SEED - After last frost. Successive plantings every 2-3 wks until late Spring gives best quality flowers and pods.

HARVESTING - for longest vase life, harvest flowers in the morning, choosing blooms that have just begun to show good color but are not yet open.
