Carrot 'Dragon'

from A$5.25

Daucus carota

Vibrant magenta, purple skin with contrasting orange/yellow flesh with a sweet flavour and thin skin. Gourmet flavour in an attractive, vigorous growing, 15-17cm carrot. Stays sweet in the heat and holds well through the cold.

Bred by John Narvazio, this carrot WINS our CSA Children’s award. Every child (sincerely, once tried, we had no child who was stuck in the “only eat orange” group) at CSA pick-up would look for extra Dragon carrots and munch them like candy – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter!

The strengtenth of this carrot is its alluring colour and sweet flavour. It is easy to clean with a quick scrub and is delicious raw and cooked. To the children’s reward, the weakness of this carrot is the brittleness of its tops at maturity. For the market grower, you can overcome this weakness through harvesting young and at maturity through sequential plantings. Your reward is the excitement of child and adults alike, when they see them.

We have successfully grown these for bunching with tops, and we have also had to bag them – while the flavour was still sooo sweet, the tops weaken at close spacings and beyond maturity. We never minded nor did our CSA members as the carrots were fantastic – raw, roasted, boiled in soups. A great four-season carrot – and John has confirmed that no selective breeding will fix the weak top. So, we breed for flavour! We taste EVERY carrot we replant for seed – confirming that it is still sweet, its core is still slight, and its colour is ever glowing!

DIRECT SEED (recommended) - Sow carrots when soil temperature is 18°C or above. Work soil well prior to planting as a softer soil allows roots to develop uniformly. Plant seeds 4-5mm deep in rows 20-25cm apart. Cover seed lightly. KEEP MOIST and do not let it dry out. Thin seedlings to 2.5-5cm. Keep area free of weeds

NOTE - Many growers plant multiple successions of carrot during a season to ensure continuous harvest. Moisture levels must be consistent from the time of planting and is essential for good root formation, texture and flavor.
