Carrot 'Little Finger'

from A$5.25

Daucus carota

  • Four season, Nantes type

  • Extra sweet, gourmet, golden orange carrot

  • Fast Maturing

  • Slow to bolt in spring (over wintered)

  • Ideal as a “baby’ size - long with a bit of meat

  • Over winters well and is slow to bolt

‘Little Finger’ is a fast maturing, heirloom with a smooth skin, crisp texture, and a small, tender core. Great choice for baby carrots and growing in containers. In addition to all of its attributes, the taste is consistently sweet, in summer and winter.

‘Little Finger’ was our all around orange carrot trial winner in flavour, four season sensibility, and overall size, shape and days to maturing in 2019 out of over 50 varieties. That’s a pretty tall claim, and best to state, the trial was conducted on our sandy, bio-dynamically managed soils. Our carrots do taste and smell sweeter, in all seasons, not just winter when all carrots sweeten to protect the roots from freezing. And, in sand, carrots do not have to break through hard pan and grow longer faster searching for water - they area tap root!

We ran the trial as we had been growing ‘Little Finger’ for 9 years and really wondered if maybe there was something better. We grew four season carrots for our CSA members and we also grew a lot of “baby” carrots every week for chefs. ‘Little Finger’ was great for both.

DIRECT SEED (recommended) - Sow carrots when soil temperature is 18°C or above. Work soil well prior to planting as a softer soil allows roots to develop uniformly. Plant seeds 4-5mm deep in rows 20-25cm apart. Cover seed lightly. KEEP MOIST and do not let it dry out. Thin seedlings to 2.5-5cm. Keep area free of weeds

NOTE - Many growers plant multiple successions of carrot during a season to ensure continuous harvest. Moisture levels must be consistent from the time of planting and is essential for good root formation, texture and flavor.
