Marigold 'Queen Sophia'

A$5.25

Tagetes patula

‘Queen Sophia’ is a French dwarf marigold with dark bronzy gold blossoms that mature to reddish gold - most tipped with gold adding the much adored two toned look. It will grow to a uniform height of 25-30cm with 5-7cm blossoms. Attractive to a host of beneficial insects and pollinators, ‘Queen Sophia’ can be tucked in with tomatoes, cabbages , lettuces, basil for a bright border. We also love it with salvias!

Easy to grow from seeds or transplants. Drought tolerant. Useful in containers.

Marigolds petals are edible - floral flavour with hints of citrus and spice and a slight bitterness - although best to remove them from the flower base which is very bitter. The whole flower is used as decoration, strung on thread or fishing line as bright floral garlands!

An All-American Selections (AAS) Winner in 1979.

TRANSPLANT (recommended) - Start seed indoors in trays 4-6 weeks before last frost, lightly covering seed. Harden-off and transplant out after last frost. For flowering in packs, sow 8 weeks before desired bloom time.

DIRECT SEED - After last frost, sow 1/4" deep. 2-3 seeds every 20-30cm. Thin to 1 plant. Pinching encourages branching.

NOTE - High temperatures can cause plants to stall, and temporarily decline in growth and bloom. Deadhead regularly to increase blooms.

HARVESTING/VASE LIFE - Harvest when ⅓-½ of the flowers on a spray are open. Will last 7-10 days in the vase.
