Poppy 'Peony Black Double' - **NOT TO TAS**

A$5.25

Papaver paeoniflorum
**NOT TO TASMANIA**

With mostly double blooms ranging from deep burgundy to plum, many with frilled edges, ‘Peony Black Double’ is the black swan of the flower kingdom! The glaucous foliage combines with the showy blossoms and the decorative seed heads making a spectacular late spring garden display.

Poppies fill the void between spring bulbs and fruit tree blossoms and warm season flowers. Their decorative seed pods, left after the flower petals have fallen, are a feature in all season arrangements. Seed is easily saved and will self seed readily if the pods are left. Seed is edible- poppy seeds are small black decorative seeds used on bread and other baked goods.

DIRECT SEED(recommended) - Sow mid Autumn - late Winter. Poppy seeds are very tiny - mix with sand to help disperse. Sow seeds on the surface of well amended soil. Breadseed Poppies NEED LIGHT to germinate. When plants have 3 leaves, thin to 20-25cm for strong plants. Thin early so as not to disturb roots. Given proper spacing, plants will produce more blooms.

TRANSPLANT- Shirley poppies DO NOT like root disturbance. We are successful with soil blocks. Place 2 seeds in each cell. DO NOT COVER. Poppy seeds prefer cooler temperatures for germination. DO NOT place on a heat mat. They also prefer fluctuations in day and night temperatures.

Keep evenly moist and use a soft spray of water so as not to dislodge seed.

When the plants have 2 true leaves, thin to one per cell. Transplant at 20-25cm spacing in well amended soil when plants have 3-4 leaves. Plants thrive in cooler temperatures and survive frosts.

NOTE - Poppy seed is fine, like caster sugar. To not drop all seed in one spot, mix the seed with fine sand. We prefer transplanting unless we have an abundance of seed.

HARVEST - Harvest blooms just as they are opening and before bees find them. Individual flowers are short lived—lasting 2-3 days if stem ends are seared 7 to 10 seconds in boiling water.
